History of Grama Panchayat

History of Grama Panchayat

Topography, Demography, and Hydrology

Ranni Grama Panchayat is situated on the southern bank of the famous holy river, Pamba. Once covered with dense forests, this region has now become completely deforested. The Ranni Grama Panchayat extends from north to south, positioned to the east and west of the Punalur-Muvattupuzha State Highway. Covering an area of 15.64 sq. km, the panchayat can be classified into 4 regions based on its topography.

Topography

Ranni is a panchayat with an area of 15.64 sq. km. The common problem faced by the agricultural sector here is crop destruction caused by wildlife attacks. The shortage of agricultural laborers has also adversely affected the growth of this sector. It can be said that paddy cultivation has completely disappeared from the panchayat. The vast paddy fields of the past have now turned into barren fallow lands.

However, the cultivation of banana, black pepper, and rubber has increased. We are not self-sufficient in food production. The intrusion of cash crops and the shortage of labor are the primary reasons for the current situation.

Currently, the major crops being cultivated are as follows:

  • Rubber: 900 hectares

  • Coconut: 40 hectares

  • Pineapple: 18 hectares

  • Black Pepper: 15 hectares

  • Cashew: 10 hectares

  • Areca nut: 7 hectares

  • Jackfruit: 7 hectares

  • Mango: 5 hectares (Note: Repeated twice in the original text)

  • Betel Leaf: 5 hectares
